The only thing I don’t know how to do and I’m afraid to mess up is the quotes above. My replies are loooooong.
You reblogged those Risorgimento pages! I had to fan myself to keep from crying and I half succeeded! Yes! That’s the scenes I was remembering. Sometimes it feels that Prussia is there to be Germany’s foil. Italy doesn’t quote fill that roll since he’s the main character. It’s as if he’s relinquished center stage to his little brother, but still wants to hog it all to himself. Either way I can’t help, but love Prussia even more.
I prefer his Japanese voice to the English voice. It conveys his personality perfectly.I’m a bad fan because I don’t remember those sketches. Did he post them on his blog? (I can’t access much at work. Even LJ, ANN and Crunchyroll are getting blocked as social networking sites. I hope tumblr isn’t ‘cause then I’ll be bored all day long.) If people start bitching because of how he resolved that, I will be majorly pissed. I would probably go on the caps community and raise holy hell. I anticipate a war that would divide fans more than the dubs did.
She was good too. I don’t know if she continued that series of fics. OH YES! When I RP England, I try to have him speak words that I know are safe. Sometimes I agonize over a word not knowing if I’ll be using American or British. If I find a list of American/British words, I bookmark it for future reference.
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one. I found it distasteful and the nail in the coffin was how gleeful the author was by how much people liked it. I haven’t been to the comm in ages, so I haven’t seen Auf Wiedersehen, Sweetheart. Now I’m curious to read it. It reminded me of another fic that I loved. It was an America/Germany, also with a German title. It translated to The Bookstore and it broke my heart at the end. The author wrote a last chapter with a better resolution. It takes place at the end of WW2. I swear I would never be interested in that pairing, but the story itself took my breath away. Of course the fic itself needed heavy betaing, but in that case I could ignore the typos and grammatical errors in favor of the story. That’s another thing that can turn me off with fics. Authors who can’t string sentences together and don’t know a lick of grammar make me want to poke my eyes out with a rusty spoon.
(OMG! Those Denmark/Sweden fanarts where they beat each other are a guilty pleasure that’s hidden at the bottom of all the fanarts I’ve saved. I’m with you on that one too.)
There’s a couple of writers, zalia and herolessons, on LJ who write the most funny and gorgeous America/England fics. They’re good writers and they cranked those babies out consistently in the past. I think people write him as an emotionally disturbed little girl because of his reaction when America almost shot him during the Revolutionary War. They think he’s still scarred by that and write his psyche that way. Can you imagine if England were really scarred like that? We wouldn’t have the relationship they have now. I can’t remember what show I was watching on which channel, but it was about the White House. It was mentioned that whenever dignitaries visited the White House, they’d play Yankee Doodle Dandy, even to the chagrin of British visitors who sometimes were asked if they preferred not to have the song played. Some did and some didn’t. They made it sound like the ones who did endured the song with great stoicism. I had to laugh thinking of these two.
It’s always been my fear that the media will get a hold of yaoi and make it big news on a slow news day and then everybody and their dog will be trying to burn those books. Just like it’s happened to a couple of guys (in Canada I think) who are in jail because they imported “child pr0n” into Canada. One day somebody will hear those Hetalia dubs and we’re all done for. It’ll be WW3.
I love Japanese voices, so I wouldn’t normally listen to dubbed voices in English. I feel the English actors lack that certain thing the Japanese voices have. So I make the exception with Hetalia. I should pop the disc in one of these nights just to get a laugh. Well, now I have to listen to Baccano (which I have) in English just to hear his voice (he voices my favorite too, Firo). Yes! Manly!Romano was awesome. Both brothers in English sound more Italian. LOL I just contradicted myself. I love Japanese voices, but with something like Hetalia, the characters benefit 1000% with the English voices and the accents they can do.
Yesterday in my reply I started to type up this thing about the GOP and the candidates and how we’re going down the toilet as a country with the current congress and republicans have to nominate one of those twits. There’s no escaping it. I just hope the closemindedness stops soon or we’ll be in more serious trouble. Did you know that there’s another SOPA/PIPA-like bill making the rounds, but this time it’s non-governmental business trying to be sneaky and implement it as guidelines. I sorta read it and moved on (short-attention span and everything) so I’m not all sure what it’s about. Either way it doesn’t sound good for democracy.
Oh, the read mores? You can do that by hitting the little button next to HTML above. But be warned - unlike LJ where you highlight everything you want under the cut, on Tumblr you just insert the cut where you want it. If you highlight everything and then hit the button, it deletes it. I have done this too many times.
Such a happy coincidence that those came onto my dash! I had to reblog them. Just beautiful. I had never thought of Hetalia and foils before, but by God, Prussia really is a foil to Germany! Seriousness and meticulous planning against spontaneity and chaos. I agree that Italy is more of an opposite than a foil - he lacks the drive that really binds both the German brothers together.
Prussia’s an interesting contradiction like that. He’s given his brother so much, and yet he always seems to be jokingly grabbing it back. The period of time where he’s raising Germany is of particular interest to me. It’s such intensive character development for both of them. Not to mention a little Germanbros fluff makes me squeal like a small child.
(Haha me tooooo. Love Prussia’s Japanese voice. The English one is just a little too annoying. But his seiyuu gets just the right balance of abrasiveness and annoying tone.)
Aw yeah, they were on his blog. I’ll post ‘em here, for convenience’s sake.

Very rough, but in his more serious style. And no, we never got any real followup there. Except for these, in his next post.

That was from about this time last year, so take it for whatever it means. (Although little!Germany in a pickelhaube is always welcome.)
Bring on that war! Someone fetch me my war helm and vuvuzela so that I may announce my presence! I shall join you in that conflict gladly. Self-entitled fans deserve to be quarreled with. And I’m more than willing to be the one to do it.
(You can get on Tumblr at work? .__. I am jealous. I could not manage even an off-topic Google search in my last job. I can’t believe they thought to block ANN, though. That’s skill.)
I RP on MSN, so I’m always going so fast that I can barely check my spelling, much less my verbiage. But I try to cling to safer words as well. Strange how language has deviated between the two locations over the years…
Oh, trust me, you’re far from alone there. I can’t think of one person I know who was particularly amused by that. Just … why. Auf Wiedersehen, Sweetheart actually just updated, over here on ff.net. The author is so brilliantly gifted with words, and the story is exquisite. If you enjoy it, check out the rest of his stuff too. It’s all amazing.
Would you happen to have that fic somewhere? I love those two. I don’t really ship them romantically, but I think the interplay between the cultures is fascinating enough that I can deal with a romantic portrayal to savor the friendship between them. The role reversal, too - to think that at one point, Germany was imitating us, and now (if I can say it without seeming too unpatriotic) they’re beating us at our own game. I’m the same with grammar, though. Even a few misplaced commas can really throw me off. I am terrifyingly picky. If it’s incoherent, 99% of the time I don’t even try.
(HAHA YES <3 I don’t know what it is about those two - I don’t get like that with any comparable fighting pair, like Germany and Russia. Very odd. But I regret nothing.)
I’ll have to read their stuff! I always love some good fic. I agree - definitely stems from the Revolutionary War. It’s annoying, because I do think it had a huge impact on him, but not to the point where it absolutely shatters his psyche, or God forbid where it still affects him today. Himaruya once described it as “100 years of heartbreak,” and I think that works; by the 1870’s, after the American Civil War, maybe, England is over it. He’ll still roll his eyes at America touting winning that war, but he’s not actually emotionally upset about it. That’s hilarious about Yankee Doodle. So much snark in that Special Relationship of ours, I swear. xD
Oh man, mine too. I don’t even get why yaoi’s a big deal - men have lesbian fantasies all the time, and very much in popular culture too. I heard about a similar case in Iowa (especially startling because I’m going to school in the same state) where a guy’s loli manga collection was busted as kiddy pr0n. I find that about fifteen different kinds of ridiculous, personally. Shota/loli, while not my cup of tea, is definitely not the equivalent of child pr0n. One involves the victimization of actual children; the other is, to the best of my assessment, a harmless fetish. Are there actual pedophiles into shota/loli? I’m sure there are. But almost all of that following would never actually harm a child, and likely would not even be attracted to actual children. That’s my two cents, at any rate. When that day of Hetalia reckoning comes, I’ll just buckle down with all the doujin in my room and wait for the storm to pass. People outside the fandom struggle to perceive what it’s really about, anyway.
I am usually with you 100% there, but Baccano is the one series I’ve found where I actually prefer the English dub to the Japanese. Definitely worth a listen. And woohoo for Firo fans! I just love him. x3
They do. The Japanese voices are right, in my head, but a lot of the English … intonations are better, if that makes any sense. Likely just the accents adding to it. German accents juxtaposed with Italian make me go weak at the knees.
Oh God the GOP. I can’t even. I’m a fairly moderate democrat myself, but holy shit. The Republican party has not put forth such a sorry series of candidates anytime in my political memory. It’s terrifying, frankly. At first I thought that putting people like Santorum up for election would be the best “re-elect Obama” campaign possible, but then I had to persuade my own mother (usually pretty moderate) out of recognizing him as legitimate and possibly voting for him. Talk about scary. I don’t know how people can fail to realize the extremism of both of these candidates.
Oh, are you talking ACTA? I think that was about regulations and something sneakier. Thankfully, Europe rose up against that pretty hard, and I think it’s just about done now. But I am not going to be able to relax ever again after that. And MegaUpload getting taken down for spite just after. That floored me more than anything. (It’s okay, I have to rely on Reddit to sum most of these things up for me. xD Actual bill language is so terribly dry.) Censorship is freaky. The thought of losing this beautiful, free connection with the world makes me pale.
